PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project for Irish Rail, at Mullingar Railway Station, Co. Westmeath was completed in December 2019. An existing bridge, carrying the station platform and track above, contained a steel and brick infill beam which had to be replaced.

To allow the works to be carried out, a road closure was required to divert traffic and pedestrians away from the bridge in question. A detailed Traffic Management Plan was developed which was approved by all relevant authorities. The existing coping stones to the platform edge were carefully removed, labelled and set aside for re-use.

Once the road closure was in place, the existing beam was broken out and removed. A new, reinforced concrete beam, weighing 10.5T, was lifted into position and bedded on to bespoke bearing pads. A task specific lift plan was developed in conjunction with the crane hire company to ensure that this could be carried out safely and efficiently. New brickwork was built on top of this beam to the previous platform level, before the original platform coping stones were re-installed.

All works were completed overnight to avoid any disruption to the station or scheduled train movements.
