GMIT Castlebar Arts Facility

About This Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This contract involved complete refurbishment of a protected structure, the original Tailor’s Workshop, on the site of the former St. Mary’s Hospital, now occupied by GMIT Castlebar Campus, into a modern arts facility classroom. The building, based on two floors, was structurally sound but was very derelict and in a very bad state of disrepair. One key element of this contract was the removal of the existing roof structure and coverings and replacement with new timbers and slates. This was achieved while working around existing feature roof trusses, which were retained in their original positions.

Internal renovations involved the delicate removal of parts of the structure and complete upgrading of all elements to modern building regulation standards. The main works included dry-lining, joinery, ceilings, floors, mechanical fit-out, electrical fit-out and lift installation. Kenaidan were able to retain the existing floorboards and after sanding & treating works were carried out, the old floor contrasted rustically with the modern surroundings.

All works were carried out during the college term with classes and exams taking place at the same time as the works. Careful co-ordination of the works was required to prevent any disturbance to the college activities.
